Veneers vs Crowns: Differences, Cost and Which to Choose

Veneers vs crowns: coverage, how much tooth is removed, lifespan and cost in the US and Turkey, plus when each one is the right choice for your teeth.

Treatment Overview at a Glance

A crown caps the whole tooth and is used to protect weak, cracked, worn or root-canal-treated teeth; it needs about 1.5–2 mm of reduction on all sides. A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a healthy tooth for cosmetic changes and needs about 0.5 mm or less. In the US crowns cost $1,000–$3,500 per tooth and porcelain veneers $925–$2,500; in Turkey both typically cost about $100–$750 per tooth depending on material. Cleveland Clinic gives 10–15 years for veneers and 5–15 years for crowns; porcelain veneers showed 95.5% 10-year survival across 6,500 veneers.

The difference between veneers and crowns is coverage: a crown caps the whole tooth, while a veneer covers only the front. Crowns need 1.5 to 2 mm of reduction on all sides; veneers 0.5 mm or less from the front. US crowns cost $1,000 to $3,500 per tooth; porcelain veneers $925 to $2,500.

When to Choose Veneers vs Crowns

Choose Veneers Over Crowns When the Tooth Is Healthy

Veneers suit structurally strong teeth where you only want to change colour, small chips or minor gaps. Cleveland Clinic notes they are only an option if you are free of extensive cavities and gum disease. They come in composite, porcelain and no-prep or minimal-prep types; even no-prep veneers need some enamel removal, and most veneers are permanent and not reversible (Cleveland Clinic).

Choose Crowns Over Veneers When the Tooth Needs Protection

Cleveland Clinic lists the reasons for a crown: to strengthen a weak tooth, protect a cracked one, restore a worn-down or broken tooth, hold a bridge, cover a severely stained tooth, cover a root-canal-treated tooth or cover a dental implant (Cleveland Clinic). Crown placement usually takes two appointments, except same-day CAD/CAM crowns — see CEREC same-day crowns.

Veneers vs Crowns Cost: US vs Turkey

Veneers vs crowns in Turkey (per tooth)Typical price
Composite veneerAbout $150 – $300
Porcelain / E.max veneerAbout $180 – $750
Zirconia crown or veneerAbout $150 – $350
Metal-fused / standard crownAbout $100 – $200
Full set (10 – 20+ units, often with hotel and transfers)About $3,000 – $8,000

Ranges as shown in Google's AI Overview for "veneers vs crowns cost turkey", October 2026. In Turkey the two overlap in price, so the choice should rest on the tooth, not the bill. For reference, the Livist Medical E.max crown package is listed at €215 per tooth (about $241) and the Hollywood Smile package with 16 E.max veneers at €3,100 (about $3,472), converted at 1 EUR = 1.12 USD on 23 October 2026. How Long Do Veneers vs Crowns Last?

Cleveland Clinic gives an average of 10 to 15 years for veneers and 5 to 15 years for crowns, with crowns lasting upwards of 30 years with good care. For porcelain veneers specifically, a systematic review of 25 studies and 6,500 veneers estimated a 10-year survival of 95.5% (J Clin Med, 2021):

Porcelain veneer outcome at 10 years (veneers vs crowns evidence)Survival
All causes of failure95.5%
Free of fracture96.3%
Free of debonding99.2%
Free of new decay99.3%
Free of root canal treatment99.0%

Veneers that covered the biting edge failed less often than those that did not, and non-feldspathic porcelain did better than feldspathic.

Veneers vs Crowns Risks and Downsides

  • Veneers: some enamel is lost permanently, teeth may become more sensitive to hot and cold, and a veneer can come off.
  • Crowns: more tooth is removed, sensitivity is possible, especially in the first weeks, crowns can break, and a poor fit can trap bacteria and cause decay; allergic reactions are rare.

Both lists are from Cleveland Clinic. Whichever you choose, check the shade first — our guide to A1 vs B1 tooth colour helps — and read what dentists mean by perfect teeth before deciding how many teeth to treat.

Do Celebrities Have Veneers or Crowns?

Most celebrity smile makeovers use porcelain veneers rather than crowns. Our breakdown of Miley Cyrus's veneers shows a typical example.
